Be Ready: The Silent Generation is Booming!
Who knew? According to gerontologists, experts who study longevity of life, they claim that 90 is the new 60! If that’s true, the Silent Generation (those born between the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s), will hypothetically be merging with the powerful baby boomers! As the baby boomer generation has been referred to as the largest population of the previous generations, this would mean that the parents of baby boomers will be joining us in full force and effect. Are we ready for what I refer to as the new “boomerang” generation, and will this close the generation gap?
Let’s explore this a bit further.
The Silent Generation was comparatively small due to the financial insecurity of the 1930s and early 1940s, the Korean War, and World War II causing people to have fewer children. They were also referred to as the “Lucky Few” as documented within the book “The Lucky Few: Between The Greatest Generation and the Baby Boom”. With that said, it’s no wonder the lucky few are living well into their 90s and past 100 years of age, who now want to refer to themselves as Baby Boomers! with a generation, born between 1946 and 1964!
A quote by historian, Landon Jones, says it all … almost exactly nine months after World War II ended….
“the cry of the baby was heard across the land”
The beginning of the “baby boom” was such that it was for those born between 1946 and 1964, and has been thriving as we’ve experienced a myriad of awakenings, such as civil rights, the women’s right to vote, the feminist movement, witnessing the man on the moon, the Internet, digital technology and now cars that can drive themselves and so on and so on.
On a personal note, I refer to my baby boomer generation as the “sandwich generation” as many of us have elderly parents and our adult children which hasn’t been experienced in history such as it is now. The average lifespan in 1936 was calculated to be 69 years which have been increasing at a steady rate of 3 months per year for the past 175 years! With that said, I intend to live 200 years old and enjoy every minute of it.
Julia Cameron, well-known for her book “The Artist’s Way”, and author of several books, including her recent book “It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again”, shares ways to identify and take action on your dreams, creative and adventurous desires. Can you imagine all the possibilities for the Silent Generation to let their voices be heard? Silent, no more!
In addition to their infinite possibilities, studies show that the largest increase in healthy years after age 65 came in the last decade. Americans could expect to live 80% of their lives without major disability. When people in their 80s and 90s are asked to share their secrets to longevity, a common response is GRATITUDE! Living in a positive mindset, faith and gratitude are keys to a happy and long life.
It goes without saying that we cannot predict the future of our lifespan and as I like to say, the present moment is now and the future is not promised, but what my takeaway is …. LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST WITH ENTHUSIASTIC EXPECTANCY!
