Seagan Eating with Amy Cramer and Lisa McComsey
Welcome to The Nancy Ferrari Show! In this episode, you have the opportunity to listen to two featured guests, Lisa McComsey and Amy Cramer, authors of their newly released book Seagan Eating : The Lure of Healthy, Sustainable Seafood + Vegan Diet.
AMY CRAMER is the founder and head chef of Vegan Eats (VeganEatsUSA.com). Vegan Eats produces a line of grab-and-go vegan meals. They will soon be available for purchase in Whole Foods stores and online. Amy has taught private vegan classes throughout Ohio and in New York City and Westchester County, New York. She also offers one-on-one vegan.
Amy and her husband Ken converted to veganism in 2007 to combat his chronically high cholesterol.
An award-winning copywriter, coauthor LISA MCCOMSEY graduated from Bucknell University with an art history degree and has worked on staff and as a freelance copywriter for a variety of publications, including Vogue, Allure, People, Life, Real Simple, Vanity Fair, Bon Appétit, House & Garden, the New York Times, and Every Day with Rachael Ray. An avid bicyclist and runner, Lisa has completed twenty-five marathons, several century rides, and a handful of triathlons.
She currently works as a freelance writer, marketing consultant, and public speaker.
Within our informational and educational conversation, Amy shared what a “seagan” is. She also shared how their combined research created the conversion and the realization that the high-quality, essential Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial to healthy cell growth. In addition, it provides proper fetal development, robust immune functions and strong organs and tissues that we can only get from fish. They were a missing link in their plant-based diets. The addition of adding fish 2-3 times per week is recommended for attaining these benefits.
Lisa adds their research revealed that although there is a plethora of healthy fish, it is most usually the smaller fish which are very high in Omega fatty acids and low in mercury.
Alaskan Wild Salmon is one of the better choices due to lack of contaminants. It’s suggested to avoid farm raised Atlantic Salmon that are given pellets for dyes. They also create pollutants in the environment. Interestingly enough, Chilean Sea Bass is near extinction and Lisa explains why she won’t order it for that reason. Their book has a great list of the good catches, including amazing recipes which are easy to incorporate into your diet. Both Lisa and Amy agree that mussels are a very good choice. Just make sure they come from a reputable fish market.
On an additional note, both Amy and Lisa encourage the use of raw cashews pureed with water to create a creamy texture to many of their recipes. Check out their Shrimp Bisque. The avoidance of dairy and oils will help avoid clogging of arteries and provide a more heart-healthy way of eating.
Words of Praise: “SEAGAN EATING: The Lure of Healthy, Sustainable Seafood + Vegan Diet by former vegans Amy Cramer and Lisa McComsey a “charming guide” for this powerhouse diet that will appeal to those looking for healthy nourishment without a militant plan” ~ Publishers Weekly
