The Unmumsy Mum with Sarah Turner
Welcome to The Nancy Ferrari Show! In this episode, I introduce you to my featured guest, Sarah Turner, author of her book “The UnMumsy Mum: The Hilarious Highs and Emotional Lows of Motherhood”. Sarah is also a freelance writer and award winning blogger from Devon, England. A graduate from the University of Exeter in 2008 with a degree in Philosophy and Sociology, she worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland until 2012, when she gave birth to her first son and decided to work part-time at the University.
Despite achieving the ‘holy grail’ of part-time work/part-time parenting, Sarah found motherhood considerably harder than she had anticipated.
For this reason, she started writing the Unmumsy Mum blog. In 2014, Sarah’s second son was born. Amidst the chaos of life with two children under three, she decided to dedicate more time to the blog, which has more than four million page views! Within her blog, Sarah documents the real highs and lows, and gave voice to the normal thoughts that often riddle parents with guilt.
Sarah shares her candid feelings about the importance of addressing the highs and lows of motherhood. Finding a support system is essential as feeling alone and isolated is not emotionally healthy.
There are many online support groups including hers!
It’s okay to feel “Mum Rage”! Releasing emotions is healthy and conveying your rage through an outlet, such as writing, going for a brisk walk, or connecting with a supportive friend will help bring emotions in check.
Social media can be both a blessing and a curse for a new Mom. Sarah emphasizes to avoid comparing yourself to other parents who may be posting about the joys of their experiences, when in reality, it could just be a facade. There is no need to feel inadequate in comparison.
Above all, solidarity is vital.
Through connection with like-minded and supportive community, you will navigate through uncharted waters of motherhood. In summary, Sarah shares that parents need to accept the unpredictability and take the crushing lows along with the pretty remarkable highs. We just gotta ride the rollercoaster!
