Re Jane: A Novel, A Contemporary Retelling Of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre
Welcome to The Nancy Ferrari Show! In this episode, I introduce you to Patricia Park, the author of “Re Jane: A Novel“, a contemporary retelling of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. This time Jane is a half-Korean, half-American orphan and Flushing Queens is the place she’s trying to escape.
Patricia’s book has received many accolades including New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and American Library Association’s Best Books of 2015. She was born and raised in Queens and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science.
She received her BA in English literature from Swarthmore College and her MFA in fiction from Boston University. She has taught writing at Boston University, Ewha Womans University Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation, and CUNY Queens College. She was a Fulbright scholar to South Korea, an Emerging Writers fellow with The Center for Fiction, and a Fellow with the American Association of University Women.
Patricia shares more about Jane Eyre and the characters in her book, how we fit into society, with focus on our immigrant upbringing, our culture and honoring our authentic selves.
Being Korean-American, Patricia shares her experiences while writing the book, she went to Korea and how she dealt with the false expectation of being met with open arms. She shares this within her book. She speaks about finding a community that feels like the right fit, regardless of what or where we “come from”.
The book tackles some weighty issues, however, the humor and comic moments cut through that weightiness. The book speaks to anyone who feels disenfranchised from the communities they’re “supposed” to belong to.
“Park’s debut is a cheeky, clever homage to Jane Eyre, interwoven with touching meditations on Korean-American identity … Park’s clever one-liners make the story memorable, and her riffs on cultural identity will resonate with any reader who’s felt out of place” ~ Publishers Weekly
