In today’s episode we talk about hiring an expert. What is an expert? Why is that important? How does that give you Authority? What kind of expert do you want to work with? What kind of expert do you need to work with? You can save time, frustration and money if you pay attention to these before you hire an expert or consultant.
“E” Earned their stripes: Credentials, substantial time effort and learning… Bottom Line: much work was done and results are realized.
“X” eXplains things: An expert who keeps critical knowledge to themselves, keeps you dependent on them.
“P” Profitability Oriented: An expert who is helping you develop the wrong things, or works the wrong problem, makes double the expense for you… in terms of more cost AND low to no profits…
“E” Excellence: Do they understand excellence versus perfection? An expert who drives you to perfection will do so by sacrificing profits
“R” Rates: Rates you can afford right now… You may want to work with a higher priced expert but if you don’t have the budget and the connections, work with someone you can afford to achieve the next step, which can take you to the next step, and the next, etc. until you reach the level where you can afford the higher priced experts who can get you to where you want to be…
“T” Truth: They tell the truth, not only about themselves which is definitely important, but also they will tell the truth about you. A true expert won’t flatter you to get your business. You almost have to earn the right to work with them.
A True Expert:
A true expert is continuously learning and improving, and that often includes areas for which there is no degree program. “I have an MBA. But what does that mean? It means I have a general understanding and competence in the funding, developing and operating a business, especially in the areas such as marketing, Intellectual Property, Compliance and some others… I find that lifelong learning and skills upgrades are absolutely essential. For instance, I spend on average 20 hours per week reading, researching and staying current.”
Question: “Do you always need an expert to get results?” Sometimes you need a project manager or a coach to keep you on track and productive, not necessarily someone knows more than you do… Example: I’ve worked with people where They don’t necessarily know more than I do, but they do know how to ask the right questions and get me more focused and able to identify and thinking about what the real priorities are… An external perspective can bring you to higher levels than what you can bring yourself… Example: A Pro Athlete at the top of their game usually has multiple coaches… A CEO has many people around them, a board of directors, their own personal coach or advisor, etc…
